About Caitlin

Music and performance are in Caitlin Downie’s DNA. Heralding from a family of performers her grandparents were accomplished performers regularly found on stage, screen and the wireless in the 50s, 60s and 70s. And indeed, had her parents not met at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama there would be no Caitlin!

Caitlin’s grandmother, Marion Studholme a lead operatic soloist of her day, later taught singing at the Royal College of Music. She also coached a particularly special pupil - her granddaughter.

Caitlin’s family history explains why her creation and delivery of A Celtic Christmas (touring 2025) is so personally and passionately observed. The music found in the show reflects her singing in the church choir as a child, as well as listening to the songs of her Celtic heritage. Her heartfelt affinity with church music also comes from her upbringing and her beliefs - just one of the reasons she is in such demand to sing at weddings and funerals.

As you might expect from a singer who relishes singing cabaret as much as oratorio, Caitlin has an innate sense of enjoyment and care in her work. It was whilst creating and singing the role of Dame Winniefred Letch with Gifford Circus that she discovered a world beyond opera and the quintessential stage, but it illustrates the delightful dichotomy that is Caitlin.

Caitlin is the voice behind the popular Sopranotron app which reached the top 5 in the UK and the top 10 in the US. She can often be found in the City of London conducting workplace choirs in offices such as Channel 4, the Performing Rights Society (PRS) or for City Law firms. On quieter days she can be found at her South London home producing A Celtic Christmas or preparing for her next solo performance whether it be for a party, the stage, a church, or as a soloist with a community choir. Whatever the musical choice from Caitlin’s eclectic repertoire, her grandmother’s baby grand piano will be her close companion.

Caitlin’s route to her current portfolio career as soprano, producer and conductor began with a BMus from Royal Holloway, University of London. Opera roles with companies such as Opera a la Carte and the Chelsea Opera Group followed, as well as working with well known names such as Ted Baker, Sugar Plum and Sink the Pink.

Caitlin has produced and performed sell out shows at The Elderflower Festival, Camden Fringe and The Edinburgh Fringe, as well as performing on the cabaret stage at London Pride. In 2017 she premiered the role of Joan Clarke in Guilty of Love, a musical about Alan Turing, and reprised the role at The Edinburgh Fringe in 2023. 2024 saw a relaunch of A Celtic Christmas with new music and venues around the country.
